Leverage cloud innovations to improve sustainable purchasing

Alibaba Cloud has used green technologies such as liquid cooling and wind power in its large-scale data centers to make 11.11 a more sustainable shopping festival. This year, the use of renewable energy in the Zhangbei County data center of Alibaba has reduced carbon emissions by more than 26,000 tons, equivalent to the amount of CO2 absorbed by a million trees each year.

The large-scale deployment of Hanguang 800, the first AI inference chip launched by Alibaba Cloud in 2019, significantly improved the efficiency of product search and recommendation at 11.11 Global Shopping Festival. The performance of the algorithm for the Taobao market search function improved by 200%, while power costs were reduced by 58%.

Alibaba Cloud’s The exclusive large-scale AI model M6 also debuted at this year’s festival, which enhanced AI-intensive operations such as designing AI-powered clothing. By dramatically reducing the time it takes to design new garments from months to less than two weeks, M6 improves production line efficiency. It is estimated that M6 compatible designs, coupled with the use of more environmentally friendly materials, can reduce the carbon footprint of t-shirt manufacturing by over 30%.

Make shopping accessible to everyone

Alibaba Cloud aims to help merchants make online shopping more attractive and inclusive to customers through new innovations and proven technologies.

The improved voice recognition technology developed by Alibaba DAMO Academy has been deployed as part of the new “senior mode” on the Taobao app, which aims to facilitate from China growing elderly population to adapt to digital life. Taking advantage of DAMO’s proprietary algorithms for speech recognition, an intelligent voice assistant called Taoxiaobao has been integrated into Taobao’s “senior mode” to support voice search. The voice assistant can recognize Chinese commands in a wide range of local accents with high accuracy rate, even in complex background noises. The voice assistant eliminates the need for users to enter text manually, which solves an issue for older users who have difficulty typing on mobile devices.

A new “medicine image search” feature that benefits the elderly was also introduced on the Taobao app during this year’s festival. Users can search for over-the-counter drugs by taking or scanning a photo of the package or container using Pailitao, the Taobao app’s image search engine. The use of photo search eliminates the need to enter long or difficult drug names for the elderly. The search results will return information about the drug and its functions. This large-scale product research has been built on multimodal AI technology that incorporates optical character recognition (OCR), which recognizes text printed on images and enables a higher degree of accuracy when processing medical images. . Taobao first integrated OCR technology in 2018, processing millions of images to provide visually impaired users with better shopping experiences.

Apply innovation

Alibaba’s last mile logistics vehicle “Xiaomanlv” has been deployed to more than 200 campuses across China to support parcel delivery during this year’s festival. Over one million packages were delivered by 350 Xiaomanlv vehicles during the festival’s initial 10-day period, exceeding the total package delivery volume in the 12 months since the launch of the logistics robot in September 2020.

Tools developed by DAMO translated tens of millions of product information to support cross-border trade during the festival. At the same time, Alibaba’s digital collaboration platform, DingTalk, processed 606,900 messages per second during the peak hours of this year’s event, enabling instant and smooth communication for users over 30 applications in the Alibaba ecosystem.
