Toyota Intros Electric bZ4X with the latest safety, heating and cooling technologies


Toyota’s all-electric bZ4X debuted in the United States today. As a leader in electrification, Toyota’s introduction of the bZ4X represents the first in a global series of battery-electric vehicles to be introduced under the global “Toyota bZ” brand. Once the rubber hits the road, the bZ4X will have a manufacturer’s estimated range of up to 250 miles for front-wheel drive XLE models.

bZ4X joins a broad lineup of Toyota electrified vehicles which, in total, account for over 24% of Toyota’s total sales volume in the United States. These include hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles, hybrids, plug-in hybrids and battery electric vehicles. Toyota envisions a future in which carbon neutrality is achieved through the practical commercialization of a portfolio of products featuring advanced alternative fuel and zero-emission powertrain technologies.

Toyota plans to expand to around 70 electrified models worldwide by 2025. This future range will include 15 dedicated BEVs, including seven bearing the brand nickname bZ (Beyond Zero). This diverse portfolio of electrified products will help propel Toyota towards its goal of carbon neutrality by 2050.

Hi-tech and emotional, both inside and out

Based on the theme of ‘hi-tech and emotional’ design, the all-new fully electric SUV offers styling as bold and modern as the vehicle itself. The front view of the bZ4X has an aerodynamic design, and the curved shape of the front bumper expresses a certain uniqueness compared to other vehicles. The large hammerhead shark shape that extends from the hood to the top of the headlights gives the bZ4X a sleek silhouette. The rear design exudes a powerful stance, thanks to the combination lights, tailgate and trapezoidal theme of the bumper that extends to the tires.

Futuristic and avant-garde styling extends to the interior with premium finishes for a distinctive look. With every detail purposefully crafted to create a sense of connection, it delivers a driver-centric design that makes you feel like you are one with the car. The unique dashboard and precisely placed MID display widens the vehicle’s sense of space, while also helping to keep the driver’s view aligned and on the road. Soundproof glass and wind noise reduction features create a quiet refuge from the outside world.

With the space one would expect from an SUV, the interior of the bZ4X provides a spacious and relaxing seat for passengers. Accessible USB ports (A and C) provide power and connection points in convenient locations. The panoramic roof provides a feeling of openness and brings the outside environment into the vehicle. Passengers will feel pampered, with plenty of legroom for the front and rear seats as well as ample side space in the rear.

Intuitive and targeted driving with off-road performance

The bZ4X delivers the off-road performance you expect from a performance SUV, combined with the smooth and fun driving performance inherent in an all-electric vehicle.

Built on the e-TNGA dedicated BEV platform, a first for Toyota, the bZ4X achieves impressive driving performance thanks to the high capacity lithium-ion battery placed flat under the floor, giving it a center of gravity low. The impressive handling is due in part to the transverse structure of the battery, which adds to the overall rigidity of the vehicle. The adoption of a lightweight body structure partially made of high-strength steel, along with improved frame components around the battery pack and front and rear suspensions also contribute to the agile responsiveness of the bZ4X. Plus, a redesigned accelerator pedal creates a smoother feel when accelerating and decelerating, paired with a smart throttle with slip suppression to deliver impressive control on slippery roads. And, when you combine that with a new AWD system with X-MODE®, an exceptional feature available for the bZ4X and a first Toyota, you get an exhilarating, yet comfortable driving experience suitable for everything from everyday driving to light off-road driving. Another impressive feature of the AWD system is Grip-Control, which harnesses the drive characteristics of the engine to achieve capable off-road performance – exceeding expectations with every turn.

The engineering team also focused on features that maximize energy savings and cruising range for year-round driving (especially in winter). In addition to the aerodynamic design choices and body weight reduction efforts, the following systems and equipment have been adopted to reduce energy consumption, especially power used for heating in cold climates:

  • Heat pump system for heating and air conditioning
  • Heated seats and steering wheels
  • Radiant heating for the feet and legs in the front seats (a first for Toyota)
  • Performance + peace of mind

Determined to deliver performance that also emphasizes safety and peace of mind, Toyota aimed to develop a BEV that would deliver many years of satisfied ownership. This includes taking into account overall runtime, especially in cold climates, and targeting 90% battery capacity retention after 10 years of ownership.

In terms of battery safety, Toyota has added numerous measures to ensure that the integrity of cells is protected. Non-conductive coolant circulates in separate flow channels to maintain optimum battery temperature. The battery case is designed to withstand a collision from any angle due to its frame and bracing design.

bZ4X will be the first to present the latest Toyota Safety SenseMT security package (TSS 3.0). This system has been improved by expanding the detection range of millimeter wave radar and monocular camera. Toyota has improved the performance of each function and added new functions to help under normal driving conditions. For example, the pre-collision system has been enhanced to offer low-light cyclist detection, daytime motorcycle detection and guardrail detection. Additionally, lane recognition is enhanced to add enhanced functionality in lane keeping assist mode.

TSS’s goal is to help prevent crashes, further reduce road fatalities and injuries, and ease the burden on drivers.

Intuitive technology

The bZ4X is packed with intuitive technological features. Owners will benefit from a user interface that offers visual, tactile and voice interaction. With a Drive Connect trial or subscription, the bZ4X offers navigation that uses map information from the cloud to obtain real-time traffic and parking space availability information. The digital key gives owners the ability to lock, unlock and start the vehicle with the touch of a smartphone. Designed to make life more convenient, digital keys can also be passed between smartphones, making it easy for family and friends to borrow and lend vehicles remotely. Other features of the trial subscription include specialist BEV services such as information on charging stations, driver assistance information and vehicle range.

Other notable features include:

  • Over-the-Air (OTA = Wireless) Software Updates: Software updates to improve performance are also possible for Toyota Safety Sense and multimedia system without the need to visit a dealership
  • Compatible with high efficiency chargers worldwide (able to charge to 80% in one hour)

Safety for the environment

By strengthening measures to help prevent and detect signs of battery failure and by introducing new technologies, the bZ4X has adopted a design and multiple monitoring system intended to ensure the safety and security of the vehicle battery system. .

This includes:

  • A meticulous production process that helps remove contamination from battery components and ensures battery durability
  • Redundant battery voltage, current and temperature monitoring designed to detect signs and occurrence of abnormal heating to help prevent overheating
  • Using high strength coolant circulation system, which can help prevent fires due to short circuits even if the battery coolant leaks
  • Integration of the high capacity battery pack into the floor of the chassis structure designed to protect in the event of a collision
